Since we are in the astrological sign of Sagittarius right now, the pose of the day is dedicated to all the Sagittarius’ out there. The body correlation for this sign is the hips, and Warrior III, or Virabhadra, opens the hips in the final installment of the three Warrior poses. Although yoga is based peace and tranquility, we are called to be “spiritual warriors” during our practices; bravely doing battle against the negative energies in and around ourselves. Warrior III tones the stomach, improves balance, posture, and all over strength.
Step One: Start in Tadasana, and exhale while stepping your left foot back into a high lung.
Step Two: Stretch your arms forward, parallel to the each other and the floor, pulling all the energy towards the tips of your fingers.
Step Three: At the same time, straighten the front leg, and lift the back leg into a high split. Stack your back bones on top of your hip bones, so your body is in a stacked line.
Step Four: Allow your body to shift forward, pulling the energy towards the finger tips and out of the back toes. Pretend you are pulling your body in two…extending your energy in both directions.
Step Five: Hold this pose for anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute, breathing deeply and looking inward. Gently place your back foot on the ground. Then bring your arms up above your head for Warrior I. Repeat on the other side.
